Facing Fear

From Fear to Freedom: Transforming Fear Into Confidence in the Saddle

June 28, 20254 min read

Fear—it’s something every rider encounters at some point. Whether it’s a fear of falling, making mistakes in competition, or pushing past limits, fear has a way of creeping in and taking the reins when we least expect it. But here’s the thing: fear is not the enemy. It’s a teacher, a guide, and an opportunity for growth—if we’re willing to listen.

In this post, I want to share how you can transform fear into freedom in your riding, drawing from both my personal journey and the strategies I teach through Forging Ahead.

Understanding Fear: Friend or Foe?

Fear often gets a bad reputation, but it’s actually a natural response designed to keep us safe. However, when fear becomes overwhelming or irrational, it can hold us back. The key is learning to recognize the difference between healthy caution and fear that limits your potential.

Healthy Caution: Keeps you aware of your surroundings and mindful of risks.
Limiting Fear: Stops you from taking action or enjoying your rides.

The first step in overcoming fear is acknowledging it. Pushing it down or pretending it doesn’t exist only makes it grow. Instead, allow yourself to feel it, name it, and begin to understand its source.

Reframing Fear as an Opportunity

Fear is a signal—it’s telling you that something matters to you. Instead of seeing it as a barrier, try to view fear as a chance to grow. Ask yourself:

  • What is this fear protecting me from?

  • What does it want me to learn?

  • How can I use this experience to become a better, more confident rider?

By shifting your perspective, fear can go from being a roadblock to a stepping stone.

Steps to Transform Fear Into Confidence

1. Start Small

Big fears feel overwhelming, so break them down into smaller, manageable steps. If you’re scared of jumping a certain height, start with something lower. Build success at each level, and watch your confidence grow.

2. Use Visualization

Imagine yourself riding through your fear with calm and control. See every detail in your mind—your horse’s rhythm, your posture, the way you feel as you ride confidently. Visualization trains your brain to believe you can succeed, even before you try.

3. Practice Grounding Techniques

When fear takes over, it often manifests physically—your heart races, your breathing quickens, and your body tenses. Grounding techniques, like deep breathing or focusing on sensory details, can help calm your nervous system.

Try this: Inhale for a count of four, all the way to your belly, then exhale for four. Keep the air flowing in a circle through your body. Repeat for 3 to 5 breaths, or until you feel more centered.

4. Reframe Negative Self-Talk

What are you saying to yourself when fear arises? Are you your biggest critic or your strongest supporter? Replace thoughts like “I can’t do this” with “I’m learning to do this” or “I’m getting stronger every day.”

5. Celebrate Small Wins

Each step forward, no matter how small, is progress. Celebrate it! Confidence is built through repetition and acknowledgment of your growth.

Personal Story: Fear on the Cross-Country Course

I’ll never forget the time I faced my fear head-on during a cross-country ride. My horse stopped at a ditch, and I fell off into it. I felt my confidence drain away. I wanted to quit, but instead, I paused, took a few deep breaths, and focused on one small step at a time. First, I got back on. Yes, back in those days, we were allowed to continue on track if we weren't injured! I walked him near the jump. Then, we trotted past it. Finally, we approached again and cleared it.

The jump wasn’t the victory—the victory was proving to myself that I could work through my fear and come out stronger on the other side.

The horse's name was Forging Ahead.

How Fear Impacts Your Horse

Remember, your horse is deeply attuned to your emotions. When you’re anxious or fearful, they pick up on that energy. By managing your own mindset, you’re not just helping yourself—you’re creating a calmer, more confident partnership with your horse.

Tools to Build Confidence and Freedom

Here are a few tools I teach in the Forging Ahead Academy that can help you overcome fear and ride with confidence:
